State of Quintana Roo

The youngest state in Mexico, it nonetheless occupies the fifth place in Mexico in terms of economic size and development.

Nearly all of its economy derives from tourism; other economic activities include wholesale and retail sale, construction, transportation and warehousing.

Cozumel Island

With its location and natural beauty, it’s no wonder tourism (including cruise arrivals), world-class diving and charter fishing are the mainstays of Cozumel’s economy.

What to Do

Cozumel’s spectacular coral reefs, immortalized on film by Jacques Cousteau, have made the island a pilgrimage for scuba divers from around the globe. But though the island is famous for dive sites such as the Palancar Reef, part of the world’s second largest reef network, the cenotes of the spectacular Dos Ojos Cave System, the Cozumel Marine Reef National Park and Chankanaab Park and Lagoon, non-divers have plenty to do and enjoy on land. Ancient Mayan ruins can be explored at San Gervasio on the north side of the island and at El Cedral to the south.

More can be learned at the Museum of the Island about Cozumel’s colorful displays and exhibits in San Miguel, the only town on the island. Consider planning your event during the months of May through September, when attendees will be able to observe giant sea turtles laying their eggs or take in the exotic migratory bird life. Cozumel has its own golf course, the Cozumel Country Club, an 18-hole Nicklaus design, championship course. And, of course, there’s always the beach!

Coming Up: The Sheraton Cozumel is scheduled for a 2018 opening, with 120 rooms, including six suites and 8,500 ft² (91,493 m²) of event, meetings and convention space.
